Few days ago, when I was scanning the news posted in The New York Times , an essay drew my attention and interested me a lot. The title is “How Christian Were the Founders?”. It shocked me due to its absolute recognition to the status of Christianity in U.S. History. The report was debating on whether to promote its religious effects of Christianity to an academic level by proclaiming that the United States is a “Christian Nation”.

I can hardly agree with this statement that Christian were the founders of the United States. When I read the words said by Imet Don Mcleroy, the chairman of the State education board, that “ I am a dentist, not a historian, but I am fascinated by history, so I’ve read a lot”, I suddenly feel that history is not “history” itself but made up of tons of non-history elements. That is to say, history will not have its meaning unless you give it your definition. History is not a discipline which ordinary people should not have a touch, on the contrary, it is made up of every single ordinary people and their everyday work, therefore, it is encouraged that every single ordinary people should be active in studying it. Hence History could not be regarded in part but as a whole. We could not say who are the founders and who are the followers; no one single person or group is the pioneer of a specific history.
Among thousands of actors in U.S. history, what role did Christian play on earth? It is really hard to define what status it has. According to some people who supported to highlight the role of Christianity, Christian were the founders of the United States because “the men who wrote the Constitution were Christians who knew the Bible”. It is hard to judge that did he conceive the Constitution with the belief in Christianity throughout the entire process, however. As a major religion in the United States, Christianity really had donated a lot to the promotion of people’s mental worlds, but the religions, on the other hand, were also utilized as a tool by the governments to control the civilian people psychologically. Accordingly, how could Christian be founders who were merely motivated to establish a far-reaching culture and civilization?
Compared to the Black History Month, which was celebrated to remind people of African American’s donation to U.S. History, the same goes for referring Christian’s importance to U.S. History textbook because that both of them request for recognitions after their awareness of ignorance. To Mcleroy, Christianity is also one thing which is purposely overlooked by American people besides African American’s significance. He said: “for our kids to not know our history, that could kill a society. That’s why to me this is a huge thing.” From his perspective, not including the origin, the theories and the development of Christianity into the history textbook is a great grievance because children need truths, otherwise they would be destroyed by a unreal society. Sounds a little bit ridiculous to me. Was it really a truth? Or he did not think of it critically at all? Those people who espouse that Christian should be into the coverage of American history think that the founders meant to make the United States to be a Christian nation, whereas I think they did not have this kind of thought at all, as seen in this journal that James Kracht pointed out “ I think the evidence indicates that the founding fathersdid not intend this to be a Christian nation, they definitely believed in some form of separation of church and state”, for instance, the “Wall of Separation”, which was come up with by Thomas Jefferson, the president who drafted the Declaration of Independence. Though the Declaration of Independence admit the faith in God, it does not mean that God is the only thing which motivated people to found the United States.

Moreover, even if the entire nation admit the importance of Christianity as well as its moral benefits, it is still inappropriate to impress the students with those uncertain and non-scientific religious theories. The schools, after all, are places for students to receive proper education instead of being convinced of whose significance in history.
With time goes by, history will only be history. What we need is to find the reflection of today from history. Truth will always be the winner no matter how much one intends to distort the history.
